With 58,000 dead, and failure to prevent Vietnam from being communist, we should have never been sticking our noses in Vietnam. Trump and many others had all rights to have avoided the draft to serve in the unjust, cruel, stupid, and pointless war.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? " ~Epicurus
"Americanism not Globalism, will be our credo." ~Donald Trump
"A communist is like a crocodile" ~Winston Churchill

As history has proven their was to much political interference within the kill chain, so commanders were hampered in the field. The use of air power was also made ineffective during the LB Johnson years. While those limitations were on the military, the South Vietnamese government was treating their people horrendously inhumane. Millions of dollars was sent to South Vietnam to provide relief, but it was sucked up and pocketed by government officials. While you had Ho Chi Minh who was recognized leader amongst his people (was their President for 25 years). He was able to rally is troops to overcome insurmountable odds, compounded with political interference did great hampered the military effort. Ho Chi Minh was said to have sent a letter to LB Johnson notifying him that the North Vietnamese people would never surrender under the threat of bombings.
Ho Chi Minh was able to get supplies into South Vietnam to help the oppressed people of the South. Winning hearts and minds, creating more issues for the US military. The North Vietnamese people were highly dedicated to their leader and had great ingenuity. It's been said that the famous Ho Chi Minh trail, which became a huge strategic goal of the US. Planes would bomb and destroy bridges and roads during the day. Over night the women, children and older men would come in and reconstruct the bridges and roads over night. Pilots have said they were totally amazed by the determination of the North's people. They would go out one a recon mission, after bombing campaigns. They claimed would have to fly back to take a double look to confirm that the bridge the blown up the day before was now back in commission and being used by the people.
The determination of the North's military to tunnel underneath the US base, American arrogance and North Vietnamese ingenuity brought on the famous Tet Offensive. On the heels of North Vietnam’s Tet Offensive in early 1968, had a big impact on President LB Johnson, he made the decision to halt escalation of the war and called for peace talks to begin. Truly amazing...some might be incline to say the Vietnam war was the perfect storm, bad political decisions by the US, a corrupt South government officials, and high motivated and determined North/South Vietnamese people/rebels. Gave America a humbling experience and it would be near 20 years before America would see another major conflict, operation the Gulf War.
If anything came good of the Vietnam Conflict was the growth in understanding that the military would learn in modern warfare. It was the first time helicopters were used, jet fighter pilots would grow in tactical warfare, the anti-war efforts back home would bring about smart weapons to limit civilian casualties. Medical science grew, prosthetics, plastic surgery and combat surgery lessons learned would advance our ability to minimize loss of life in our fight against terrorism since 9-11. We lost nearly 58,000 American lives during the Vietnam to only 6957 military and DoD civilian[1] live lost in nearly 30 years. The lessons learn ultimately led to the US becoming the world's first Hyper Power.

Sound familiar to anyone? What about:
"All men are born free and with equal rights, and must always remain free and have equal rights.”
The former is from the US Declaration of Independence and the latter is from the French Rights of Man and the Citizen. They are also both from the Vietnamese declaration of Independence when they argued in 1945 that their country shouldn't be a colony and possession of another country halfway around the world and that they should have freedom - the freedom those countries promise their own citizens, rather than being subjugated. The first Indochina war was fought by France and the USA to stop Vietnam getting its freedom. The fighting stopped again on the basis of elections deciding who would control the country, with the two main options being the Communist northern bloc or the French/US puppet Southern Bloc. These elections never happened because, as U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower stated "I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indochinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held as of the time of the fighting, possibly eighty percent of the population would have voted for the Communist Ho Chi Minh as their leader rather than Chief of State Bao Dai". Better from the USA's perspective to fight a war rather than let people democratically decide their own government.
Neither side was great during the Vietnam war, but at the highest levels the USA entered the war as an anti-democratic force. That shouldn't be supported.
